After his wife Lilli died of cancer in 1986, he returned to his native Buenos Aires. He committed suicide with a gunshot to his head four years later.
Married to German-born actress Lilli Palmer after they met shooting a 1956 German film. They married months after her divorced from Rex Harrison in late 1957.
Thompson left acting in the late 1960s to become a writer and TV producer.
Moved back to Europe in the mid 1950s and appeared in a large number of German films.
Played leading roles on stage and in films in Argentina before arriving in Hollywood in the 1950s. Known for playing gigolo types opposite the likes of Lana Turner , Eleanor Parker and Yvonne De Carlo.
Of German Swiss parentage.
Committed suicide (by shooting himself in the right temple) in his apartment in the fashionable Barrio Norte district of Buenos Aires.
