After WWII he dubbed Joseph Stalin on German TV.

In 1979, he was awarded the German Filmband in Gold for lifetime achievement.

First on stage from 1931 at the Nationaltheater in Mannheim, initially cast in youthful supporting roles and as bon vivants. Mentored by Willy Birgel, who promoted him to film producers. On screen from 1937, often typecast in propagandist German films of the war period as Luftwaffe officers. More introspective roles which followed after the war included laconic or disillusioned veterans, rough-hewn mariners or benevolent fathers.

Was the German dubbing voice for Hollywood actors Robert Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Jose Ferrer, Lee J. Cobb, William Holden, Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn.

Long-standing ensemble member of various Berlin theatres, including the Schillertheater.
