Her mother was also an author, Elisabeth Cobb. She wrote "My Wayward Parent", 1945, Indianapolis & New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company.

She is the granddaughter of Irvin S. Cobb , a successful author originally from Paducah, Kentucky who later moved to New York and worked for Pulitzers New York and Evening and Sunday World. He was also good friends with Will Rogers, among many other famous people.

Her father was Frank Chapman, a talented singer in his own right, who was the husband and agent for Gladys Swarthout.

Her step-mother was Gladys Swarthout, one of the most noted celebrities in the 30s and 40s.

She is survived by her brother, Tom Brody.
