He originally wanted a studio to finance and release his film Twice in a Lifetime but none were interested. He raised money independently by using his share of Tandem Productions, the TV production company he founded with Norman Lear , as collateral, made the film and released it himself.

He was originally hired to direct Myra Breckinridge but quit and was replaced by Michael Sarne.

Held a degree in engineering from Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In 1958, he teamed up with Norman Lear to form Tandem Productions, turning out hit shows like Maude, All in the Family, and Sanford and Son.
