The ten short stories collected here cover different genres and create their own little worlds. I liked that about them and found the telling intriguing, but felt that the author's style sometimes left a little more to be desired.
I've been a fan of short fiction for decades, beginning with Ray Bradbury's stories, which I read as a young teen in the 1980s, and moving on through the writings of Ray Carver, Lorrie Moore, Kevin Brockmeier and numerous others.Yellowcake reminds me vaguely of some of Bradbury's stories, where magical and intriguing things lurk around every corner, but where the characters are still relatively grounded.
First, if you are not a fan of short stories, you should probably avoid this book, as it's a collection of ten stories. The author is a very talented writer, and all the stories will hold your interest.
I absolutely love a good collection of short stories, and Yellowcake is a great collection! I felt fulfilled when I finished this book and spent weeks in her worlds.
The writing of this book is powerful and unrelenting. There is an immediacy to it, and a closeness to the writer that is just alluring.
Margo Lanagan has a talent for writing original stories, and can actually be quite shocking. Stories partly based on legends, with her own twists.
I'm not really crazy about short story books, but this one was pretty good. These stories are a bit creepy, but admittedly, I get creeped out pretty easily.
Really neat short stories! I love that they covered different genres.
...from delightful to delightfully CREEPY!
Wow. This author has an imagination!
10 short stories are contained in the collection called Yellowcake. Magic is the main topic for all the stories but they are aimed at magical worlds or magic as everyday occurrences.
These short stories weren't my cup of tea. They are well-writ in a literary way, but the plotting in most of of it is vague and chaotic.
I don't remember what I was expecting when I picked up this book - but it wasn't what I got.And that is meant in the best of ways.
Margo Lanagan is an Aussie author with a huge native following that has just released this collection of short stories in the US. Young readers will find her stories highly entertaining and suspenseful but not too terrifying.
"Yellowcake" is one of the more bizarre books I have read in a while. Reading it is like looking at mirror fragments, only instead of all reflecting the same, broken picture, the shards reflect different pictures.
