Fans of historical fiction will want to take a look at The Seventh Etching (2012), Judith White’s debut novel, which takes place in 17th century Holland. White tells a complex story about compelling characters in scenes enhanced by rich descriptions of everyday life in Amsterdam, the world’s richest, most cosmopolitan city.
This novel began with a Prologue that became a perplexing mystery for me, when I began to doubt I'd ever tie it in with the rest of the narrative. I soon forgot about it, though, when the story about the little girl, Nelleke, became so engrossing.
What a page-turner this novel is! It has it all: engaging characters (particularly the chief protagonist, Nelleke), a fascinating, detailed view of daily life among both the rich and the poor in 17th century Holland, and a compelling plot that left me eager to read the sequel.
I was looking forward to some gripping historical fiction, but I found I did not like this book for several reasons. First off is the character of Nelleke, who is so charming and happy that she is completely unbelievable.
The Seventh Etching is Judith K. White's debut novel, and how novel it is!
This book, an historical novel set in Amsterdam in the 1600s (the "Golden Age"), is so well written that each page seems to be gilded with pure gold. While many writers have focused on the famous artists of this time period, Judith White gives us an amazingly clear insight into the lives of two troubled families, an adorably energetic orphan, and her loving friend and companion.
Wow!!!!!I really enjoyed reading your novel.
The Seventh Etching gives readers a fascinating glimpse into 17th century Amsterdam. This novel is the story of two families suffering strife, and covers both extreme wealth and poverty during the era.
The Seventh Etching is a delightful, charming, smoothly written novel. I am a prolific reader.
The Seventh Etching is an engaging, carefully researched historical novel about Golden Age Amsterdam, featuring relatable characters placed in mostly domestic dramatic situations. Focused on the misadventures of a surprisingly modern little orphan girl with an indomitable spirit, The Seventh Etching realistically portrays extremes of poverty and wealth; business, culinary and medical practices; the 17th century worldviews of merchant-class Holland and Spain; social caste; issues of race and religion; and romance.
Being born and raised in Amsterdam, I felt almost flattered when I found out that an American author took `my' city as the topic of her novel. And she didn't disappoint me!
I took the day off today and read The Seventh Etching. As an American who lived in Amsterdam for many years, I appreciated the writer's admiring embrace of the city, complete with many details about its rich history.
The Seventh Etching is a brilliant and unforgettable book. From the very first few pages, the reader is transported to 17th Century Amsterdam, with all of its sights and sounds.

For last month's entry in the TBR Challenge (that ended up being an entry for HF challenge too) I chose The Seventh Etching by Judith K. White.
