Has taught journalism at Stanford University, and has taught oboe at the University of California-Berkeley and at Mills College.

In 2005 she published Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music (Atlantic Monthly Press), a memoir of her experiences in the classical music world.

Writes about classical music for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the International Herald Tribune. Former staff writer at the San Francisco Examiner and the Contra Costa Times.

Attended the North Carolina School of the Arts from 1975 to 1978. She spent 21 years as a professional musician in New York City, playing with the New York Philharmonic, presenting a solo debut at Carnegie Hall, and earning a jazz Grammy nomination.

Has a masters in journalism from Stanford.
