Mother of actor Gtz George (born 23 July 1938).

Mother of actor Jan George (born 1932).

Being a respected stage actress for decades, she received Germanys Cross of Merit, First Class in 1981.

Studied acting at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin under Max Reinhardt and made her stage debut in 1925.

Published her autobiography "Wohin des Weges?" (literally for "Where do you go?") in 1986.

Stage and screen character actress of powerful presence, notable especially in dominant or larger-than-life maternal roles. Her wide acting range encompassed many roles in classic plays on the Berlin stage (Beckett, Shaw, Gnter Grass, etc.). Popular on television and dubbing voice for actresses Agnes Moorehead, Kathleen Freeman and Sylvia Sidney.

From 1926 to 1930 was an ensemble member of the Munich Kammerspiele.

A teachers daughter, she studied singing in Berlin in 1920 with the intention of becoming an opera singer. Her voice was deemed to be unsuitable and she became an actress instead.
