British doyenne of the classical stage who, later in life, appeared with more frequency in selected films and TV programs as a character support. Also known for her writings.

From a highly distinguished family: Her father was humorist Rudolph Chambers Lehmann, her great-uncle was the painter Henri Lehmann, her brother was essayist and poet John Lehmann, and her sister was novelist Rosamond Lehmann.

Sat for 13 portraits now housed at the National Portrait Gallery.

From 1946, director of the Arts Council Midland Theatre Company.

Trained for acting at RADA. Theatrical debut at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1924 in The way of the World.
