British character actor, trained at RADA. On stage from 1927, films from 1937. Was best known for his performance as Sir Percy Blakeney in The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel , which he followed up with another hit in the comedy mystery This Man Is News . His later career was marred by an illness he contracted during World War II. His second wife was the actress Diana Churchill.
