British film actor
On stage from 1921, screen from 1932, latterly as a balding character actor. Best known for aristocratic portrayals and as the crazed scientist of Seven Days to Noon . Retired in 1966.
Educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey. At the tender age of seven, he attempted to join a touring Shakespearean troupe. Got his first job in a steam ship office, then wartime service in 1914 with the Royal Irish fusiliers. Wounded in action in 1916, but remained in military service until 1921.
Life partner of actor and writer Maurice Colbourne. Jones appeared in the title role in Colbournes play Charles the King at the Lyric Theatre in London in 1936.
He was awarded the A.O. (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the 1993 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to the promotion of science, the arts and film, writing and Australian politics.
He was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal in the 2001 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to Australia as a knowledge nation.
