Founded Twisted Nerve Records with partner Andy Votel, who released the album Styles of the Unexpected in April 2001. They met in a Manchester nightclub.

His album The Hour of Bewilderbeast was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2000, and his latest release, the soundtrack to the movie About a Boy, has been equally lauded, enthusiastically embraced by both critics and the public. Hes currently (June 2002) in a Los Angeles studio working on his "official" follow-up to Bewilderbeast, due later this year.

He is a big Bruce Springsteen fan and chose him as his specialist subject for his appearance on "Mastermind" .

His 2002 song "You Were Right" was played heavily by BBC Radio 2 and became a UK top ten single, staying on the chart for three weeks.
