His brother was the editor of the British Medical Journal and has appeared as a television doctor.

Father of Clay Smith.

His hobbies included boating and sports fishing. He founded the Arthur Smith Sportsfishing Tournaments, which ran for almost 20 years on the Carolina coast, Florida, New York, and the Great Lakes.

He was an influential guitarist in country and early rock n roll. He also ran a recording studio and record labels, and had a successful career as a radio and TV presenter.

Warner Brothers studio used a cover version of Smiths 1955 composition "Feudin Banjos" and renamed it "Dueling Banjos" for use in Deliverance . Banjo player Eric Weissberg , who recorded "Dueling Banjos" for the movie, said hed grown up playing that piece and thought it was an old traditional song with no known writer, and nobody bothered to check. Smith sued Warner Brothers for using his song without permission, and won substantial royalties.
