Co-author of the song "Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema" in the original Portuguese), one of the most played and recorded songs ever. The song was first inspired by Hel Pinheiro , a young girl he and poet Vinicius de Moraes used to see passing in Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He is popularly known in Brazil as Tom Jobim.
Children: Paulo Jobim [b. 14 August 1950] and Elizabeth [b. 26 August 1957] with Thereza and Joo Francisco [b. 20 October 1979, d. 21 July 1998] and Maria Luza Helena [b. 20 March 1987] with Ana.
