Shakespearean repertory player with trademark deep voice who appeared on the classical stage ("Macbeth," "King Lear," "Romeo and Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," "A Midsummer Nights Dream") and occasionally supported on film as various dignitaries. He also played Brackenbury, the jailkeeper, in Laurence Olivier s film of "Richard III" .

Father of Marty Cruikshank and Harriet Cruickshank and grandfather of Blue MacAskill.

Served in the British Army, 1940-45.

Initially trained as an engineer, but went with an acting career after appearing with the Aberdeen Lyric Opera Company. He subsequently toured Britain with various repertory companies, before landing a part in a 1930 London production of "Othello", alongside Paul Robeson. Following that, he had a lengthy stint with the Old Vic in London, as well as on tour in Europe and Egypt.
