Mayor of West Berlin from 1957 to 1966. He stood next to US President John F. Kennedy when he gave his famous speech criticizing communism on his Berlin trip.
Foreign minister and vice chancellor of West Germany from 1966 to 1969.
Was the first Social-Democratic chancellor of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. He was followed by Helmut Schmidt (SPD) in 1974.
