Reviews

As the end credits roll on the final episode of what has been a rather thrilling series, I must commend the BBC on a good effort. The cinematography is superb one of the defining aspects of 'War & Peace'.

I've just watched the last episode of BBC's War & Peace in the hope that I would surely find more favourable things to say about it, but sadly that's not the case. I found episode 1 very clunky (especially the introductory steadicam shot at Gillian Anderson's party - I can't actually remember which character she was playing!

I watched the whole series in a few sittings and I found it to be worthy of it's literary masterpiece status. From the acting, the directing, the production design, set design, costume design even makeup each component of a production that brings a great piece of literature to visual life was to done here perfectly.

War & Peace is simply a triumph. I did try to read the book once, the word 'try' being operative, so I'm not considering it as an interpretation of the printed page.

War& Peace finished on TV last night and in my opinion it was one of the finest programmes I have ever seen on TV!! The producers may of had the American market in mind as the six part series was all but a precis of Tolstoys monumental work.

Right, I'll cut to the chase, I've never read the book War and Peace and the BBC Adaptation is the first time I've ever paid it any attention. My main draws for watching the show were Lily James (Downton Abbey) and Tom Burke (The Musketeers) and a growing love for 'period dramas'...

This isn't my personal cup of tea normally, but found this pleasantly good television. Gripping and dramatic.

I didn't expect this to be the best rendition of War and Peace ever done but it is by far. Paul Dano deserves many awards for his performance and i hope he chooses to do more films like this in the future.

-------SPOILERS------------ I think ,like the book, this series has to work on 4 levels.Historical, social, personal and philosophical.
