A lot of the 1 stars are just complaining about the diversity and historical inaccuracy. The show is a satire, and does a great job at being a successful one.
Elle Fanning definitely isn't my previous princess i remember, she is smart, clever, and charming. Really like she act in this series.
I was surprised that my 28 yr old niece turned me on to what I thought was a historical drama. Though I love them, I thought, "Am I in the mood to watch another piece on Catherine the Great?
Not exactly accurate but great show none the less.

I watched the complete season before I rated it, then I gave it ten out of ten. It started off superb, and was better every episode.
While apparently even historically inaccurate compared to an old Marlene Dietrich movie, The Great is a fantastically entertaining piece of nonsense with Elle Fanning giving a quirky, very funny performance as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult giving a funny, infuriating one as Peter (also a shout out to Phoebe Fox's snarky servant).The series is consistently entertaining, generally funny, sometimes shocking or horrific, and often just plain nuts.
I loved the series. But just had this bad feeling with Fanning as Catherine.
