I've seen the original and loved it. I agree with those who say don't compare it to the original because it's nothing like it except for one quick scene that appears supernatural.

People want it to be too similar to the first series. But they seem to forget that the final season was rushed and all over the place.
I just finished the first season and came here to read about season 2. I was expecting high rates, only to see a 6.
It's not penny dreadful, Just dreadful.I gave up at around halfway 4th episode when policeman assaulted the girl.
Once again the tv series Gods have ruined a perfectly good idea trying to wring a few extra dollars out of the unsuspecting public. Gone are all the elements that made this series exceptional and the result is a hotchpotch of vague and boring screenplay with a storyline that is weak at best.
After reading the comments here I am really happy I didn't see the old series. Probably I would have been very disappointed.
This show should not include the words 'penny dreadful' in the title. Even though it is done by the original creator, it has nothing to do with the original series.
