Mentions of AstroTurf (introduced in 1965) in 1963.

Although the latter portion of film takes place in January, we never see any evidence of snow, even though the film is set in Massachusetts.

Also, the characters don't always seem to dress appropriately for winter in Massachusetts, dressing more as if it were autumn.

Charlotte's blue eye shadow disappears and reappears as she goes to/returns from the hospital.

During the fight between Charlotte and Mrs.

Flax (in the kitchen, after Kate nearly drowns,) Mrs.

Flax leaves the kitchen and returns with a suitcase, the mascara of her right eye running down her cheek.

We cut away, and quickly cut back; her eye makeup is perfect.

As the groceries are being put away, a Dole can with a 1990s logo is visible in the refrigerator.

The subtitle "1963" is shown as Charlotte watches 'Soeur Sourire' (qv) perform "Dominique" on the 5 January 1964 broadcast of "The Ed Sullivan Show".

When Charlotte, faints in the hallway you hear her hit the floor but her feet are still moving backwards.

Reviews

Imagine wandering through the oldest woods of a fairytale, the dimming of winter chilling your heart as you cling to the warmth of a prayer. Imagine feeling swallowed by the stars as you search for a home, on a quest to find yourself.

A single mother, Mrs Flax (played by Cher), relocates to a small town with her two daughters, Charlotte (Winona Ryder) and Kate (Christina Ricci). We see how their relationship evolves and new relationships are formed.

A plot synopsis makes this film sound weird, and I think maybe it is. Told through the eyes of older daughter Charlotte (Winona Ryder), who is at that awkward teenage stage when, well, you know, it concerns the Flax family in 1960s middle America.

I really loved this film since it was about mermaids. It was nice to see the story of mermaids in a different light.

Such a sweet movie, especially if you're into complicated mother/daughter relationships. Winona is my hero, Christina Ricci is darling, and Cher is absolute perfection and I can't take my eyes off her when she's on screen.

Not to say that this movie is a rarely talked about movie, but an underrated chick flick. "Mermaids" tells the story of an upbeat mother named Rachel Flax (Cher) who after every failed relationship she moves to another state along with her two daughters Charlotte and Kate (Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci)and finally settles down in a small town in Massachusetts and finds herself in a relationship with a shoe-salesman named Lou Landsky (Bob Hoskins).

Made in 1990 but set in the early 1960s (news report of Kennedy death in 1963), Rachel Flax (Cher, 44) is an unconventional, some might say 'flaky', mom of Charlotte (Winona Ryder, 18) and Kate (Christina Ricci, 10). When there is any kind of disagreement, it is always about her.

I have rated more than a thousand documentaries on IMDB. This is one of the most profound and beautiful ones.

How can people not love this movie as I love it. Watch it when you have the chance.
