Reviews

Para além de um documentário esta obra é um marco na história do cinema. Dziga Vertov estava extremamente bem situado na sua época quando criou o "O Homem da Câmara de Filmar".

This Russian silent film was featured in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, I assumed it was a drama or themed story, I had no idea it was a documentary or experimental film, but I was definitely going to watch it because of the high ratings from critics. Basically it is an unabashedly avant-garde style film that proves that film can do anything and take the audience anywhere, it revolutionised many camera effects and techniques that have become standard and often adapted into various genres of film.

I had picked this up due to academic interest and expected that this would be a bit boring and that I need to explicitly consider the fact that this movie was made way back in 1929.Well, the movie was very engaging.

It's rare when a legendary film that you are seeing for the very first time not only matches its lofty reputation - but, far exceeds it. Such is the case with Dziga Vertov's Soviet masterwork, MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA.

Man With A Movie is a 1929 silent experimental documentary directed by Dziga Vertov. What a masterpiece this film his, I love it, in fact it's the first silent film that I've seen that entered my top 10 personal favourite films of all time, I also feel like it's overall one of the best films I've seen so far in my life, in fact I think that it's easily the best documentary I've watched, and sure I haven't watched a huge ammount of documentaries wich includes a lot of very famous and very acclaimed works (for example Shoah and The Act Of Killing) but for some reason I can't really explain, I just feel like Man With A Movie Camera will continue to be the best in my eyes.

Wasn't a fan. I like narrative heavy films so this just really didn't do it for me.

Short synopsis: Man with a movie camera shows a man moving around in Moscow around and documenting urban Russian life with portable camera during a typical day. Documentary film is an experimental montage of creative camera techniques.

I wrote this in April 2012, and still subscribe to every word.Having never seen this before, I was expecting something that after 80 years would seem piffling, banal, trashy and insipid.

Sometimes called 'A Man with a Movie Camera', 'The Man with the Movie Camera', 'The Man with a Camera', 'The Man with the Kino-camera', or 'Living Russia'. This experimental, avante-garde film is indeed, a confusing masterpiece.
