Being illiterate in Chile's history of political coup of 1973, I saw this as a complete outsider. However it did struck me watching the bondage of two kids from different classes.

Now, I don't claim to be an expert on Chilean history, but I'd like to think I know a good film when I see one... and this fits the bill.

I watched the film with my mother, who lived through the coup d'etat in Chile. The events depicted in the movie were so realistic, they transported her back to that era.

In 1973, the Chilean military, under the direction of General Augusto Pinochet and backed by the CIA, overthrew the shaky socialist government of democratically elected President Salvador Allende. The coup led to the murder of 3,000 leftist Allende supporters and the detention of an estimated 250,000 political prisoners.

"Machuca" is an excellent film for all ages made by Chilian filmmaker Andres Wood. The best thing which can be said about "Machuca" is that it is one the those rare films which are a superb visual statement on human condition.

Wood's film is a touching memoir that takes place right before the coup d'état and the start of Pinochet's dictatorship of Chile in 1973. The friendship between the two boys tells the story from a different perspective, one that is not explicitly political but incredibly real and thought provoking.

The (perfect) world of opposites. It is said that children are the mirrors of the future and the reaction one can get out a child is pure.
