Joannon's direction is rather poor, to match the script and photography.The great Pierre Fresnay plays Fournier, who catches three young men stealing only to let them go, and is then ensnared by the beautiful Girardot, who accuses him of attempted rape.
I'm amazed how fantastic this film is. Good actors, good direction and very nice music.

Ce drame criminel, tournée en 1956, a deux points forts: son interprétation (Pierre Fresnay en tête est comme d'habitude génial, et la jeune Annie Girardot est très convaincante dans le rôle d'une garce) et son scénario qui, en apparence, rappelle les valeurs humaines les plus fondamentales tout en donnant au personnage de Fresnay un aspect plus noir que la mise en scène, solide mais vraiment sans génie, de Joannon n'exploite pas. Le défaut du film est donc d'en rester à un propos moral, voire moralisateur, et de ne pas utiliser les ambiguïtés du personnage de Fresnay.
