Throughout the '60s and '70s, John Cassavetes was one of the directors helping revolutionize cinema. "Husbands" is an example.

Good the first quarter of the film But it never goes anywhere. The characters are not likeable.

If you want to introduce yourself or a friend to the work of independent film maverick John Cassavetes, start here. This film revolves around and around the three principal characters, played brilliantly by Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara and Cassavetes.

Harry (Ben Gazzara), Archie Black (Peter Falk), and Gus Demetri (John Cassavetes) are best friends leaving the funeral of their dead friend. The men are husbands and fathers of families.

Probably one of those films that'll get to you more the older you get. Perhaps better put: I see this film getting to me more the older I'll (hopefully) get.

Three men (Falk, Cassavettes, and Gazzara) mourn the death of a friend by going on a long-weekend bender, during which they talk about life, experience masculine pleasures, and try to understand the meaning of it all. This was the first Cassavettes movie I've ever seen.

In my view Husbands is the premier and frankly unparalleled example of naturalistic film making. It is unsentimental and without an iota of manipulation.

There's no doubting the film-making innovation of the pioneer of American independent cinema, John Cassavetes. But if any of his films were to be considered a stain on his CV, it would be Husbands.

Confusing? Irritating?
