Reviews

I've always been a fan of Sidney Poitier, from a very young age - this performance trumps every other I've seen from him. A fantastic ensemble supporting cast including Oscar Winner Lou Gossett, Jnr made this simple tale of the Hopes, ambitions and dreams of a poor black American family very real.

An insurance payout amplifies the tensions in a small overcrowded apartment of a three generation family. The resulting misfortune and the prejudice suffered brings them closer.

It's rare to see a film version of a movie, be as good as the play version, but 1961's 'A Raisin in the Sun' does that. Based on the play made in 1959 by an African-American playwright and painter Lorraine Hansberry.

I am not a huge fan of remakes, particularly when the original is as iconic as the 1961 A RAISIN IN THE SUN. But this is a worthy effort, particularly considering it was made for television.

My first taste of Sidney Poitier found me near tears and in a strange state of deep thought. The loneliness of a dream deferred is related absolutely perfectly, almost breathtakingly.

It is said that an author must have a measured amount of distance (in terms of time) from her subject matter before she can write about it. This is to give her time to digest and let the the incident settle in her mind and emotion so that she may do justice to her work.

Dynamic cast that captured struggle and triumph of a family wanting to progress in life.Too many great quotes from this movie but all inspiring to capture the essences of where power and strength come from.

The actors in this movie are great actors. That could be said for every one of them.

In continuing to review African-Americans in film in chronological order for Black History Month, we're now at 1961 when Lorraine Hansberry's compelling play-"A Raisin in the Sun"-is adapted by her for the big screen with much of the cast-Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Diana Sands, Ivan Dixon, Louis Gossett Jr., Claudia McNeil, and John Fiedler-reprising their roles.
