An area next to Austrias national theater, the Vienna Burgtheater, was named "Josef-Meinrad-Platz" in 1997 to commemorate the renowned stage actor.

Keeper of the Iffland Ring, the highest lifetime achievement for a German speaking actor, from 1959 until his death in 1996. His successor is Bruno Ganz.

Received the City of Viennas honor ring in 1983.

While he was type casted as cunning servant or subordinate in his younger years, he later often played the "civil nobleman".
