He was awarded Knighthood of the British Empire in the 2000 Queens Millennium Honors List for his services to Music.
(June 2008) Professor Tavener is based in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, England.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He began his musical career as a teenage organist at a Presbyterian church in London.
Survived by his wife and three children, Theodora, Sofia and Orlando.
