Comic star of post-war German cinema, adept at portraying all manner of silly or affectatious men from aristocrats to obsequious servants.
Son of a Viennese veterinarian. He initially studied medicine and briefly worked as an intern at the University of Vienna. He then changed career course and attended the Reinhardt Seminar, as well as writing for cabaret. By 1949, he first appeared on screen in an acting role.
