Freddy Quinn was born on 27 September 1931 in Lower Austria and grew up in Vienna. His popularity as singer and actor in the German speaking region soared in the late 1950s and 1960s, when he adopted the persona of the rootless wanderer who goes to sea but longs for a home, family and friends. His first hit was "Heimweh", the German version of 'Dean Martin .

After growing up in Vienna and his parents divorce, his father took him to the US, but Freddy soon returned to Europe.

Sold over 8 million copies of his first hit record "Heimweh" (Homesickness). which ranked #1 in the German charts for five months .

Performed on stage in such diverse roles as "Prince Orlofsky" in "The Bat" or the king in "The King and I".

Had ten number 1 hits in the German single charts between 1956 and 1966.
