Was an athlete and runner as a young man and played semi-pro basketball.

Served as a volunteer overseas during the Korean War, as an alternative to military service. He was invited to the White House by Eisenhower to discuss his service as the administration considered the possibility of a Peace Corps (not realized until Kennedys administration), but he had to decline to due his live-TV commitments.

He played Helen Hunt s father in Quarterback Princess and her grandfather in Peggy Sue Got Married .

Before he was cast as Justinian in The Viking Queen , the role was offered to Christopher Lee but he turned it down.

Originally, "Knots Landing" was intended to be a soap opera vehicle for both him & Michele Lee , from the beginning, until he chose to leave the show at the beginning of the third season.

Had decided to leave his role on "Knots Landing" at the beginning of the third season, to focus on other projects, but still remains close to Michele Lee , who played his first TV wife.

He came out of retirement after 16 years to play the part of Bushnell Mullins on Twin Peaks.
