Young warriors

stories of strength

WHAT MAKES A warrior? This gutsy collection of 15 original short stories compiled by bestselling author Tamora Pierce and anthologist-author Josepha Sherman answers this question with thought, heart, a lot of variety, and an occasional wink.

Reviews

These stories are very good in different ways. The thing the reader needs to keep in mind is that the stories aren't supposed to flow or fit together-that's the whole point of the book.
Since I like to write and read in multi-genres, I particularly enjoyed this collection of short stories. The fact that they were all inspirng--emphasizing the strength and courage of our youth--added to my pleasure.
"Young Warriors" is, on the whole, an enjoyable collection. It contains fifteen stories about young people and children written by authors of greatly varying fame and experience.
The one thing I love about Tamora Pierce is her character development. She takes "real people" and fleshes them out in fantastical settings; characters with incredible backstories and lands rich with their own histories.
I am not usually a fan of short stories, but this anthology piqued my interest because 1) it contains a story by Tamora Pierce, 2) it is EDITED by Tamora Pierce (along with Josepha Sherman), and 3) it includes the short story that became the basis for Esther Friesner's Helen of Sparta books (which I just read). While those stories alone would have been worth the price of admission to me, I found plenty more to love in this collection.
Young Warriors is a strong anthology about what it means not only to be a warrior but also an adult. The fifteen stories follow young people all making choices about what's important to them whether that's a girl who learns to fight from the animals she sees in her chores to others who learn fighting isn't where strength comes from.
I read the first few stories but didn't feel compelled to keep reading. And it's rare for me not to finish a book.
4.
I'll review each of the 15 stories separately (quickly) then my overall impression. The Gift of Rain Mountain (Bruce Holland Rogers)-- This story started off a little too slow for me.
