An beautifully written, and profusely, elegantly illustrated book. An unusual and fitting match between the extraordinary skills of the writer and the times and talent of his unique subject.
I grew up with this 1976 biography by the late author Wolf Mankowitz in my family's library, and still use it as reference in regards to the life of Charles Dickens. When A&E debuted its "Biography" of Dickens, I suspected that this book may have been used as a reference point for that television production as well, as many images featured in it--both color and black and white--also appear in the book, and it is noteworthy that Mankowitz was a novelist, playwright, scriptwriter and film director.
