In the "bargain books" bin I spotted "There and Back Again" by Sean Astin for the enticing price of 3 bucks. Sorry, Mr.
As a huge fan of Peter Jackson's 3 film extravaganza LOTR I found it fascinating to venture behind the scenes during the 18 month New Zealand shoot thru the eyes and ears of Sean Astin. Reading this book left me even more in awe of Peter Jackson's talent and the struggles he faced while filming 3 epic films at once.
This is a brutally honest, very personal look into the life of Sean Astin. The first half of the book is primarily about his life before he played Sam Gamgee and the second half dealing with his life and experiences while filming that story.
There are five-star books and there are five-star books. This is not a five-star, put down that copy of War and Peace or Moby Dick and read this book, book.
There and Back Again is a book you will either love or hate. You will love it if:1.
Being a big LOTR fan, I bought There and Back Again hoping for some insight into what went behind the scenes in making the trilogy. Although indeed some insight is given, most of the book is a semi-autobiography of Sean Astin and focuses mostly on his personal lack of self-confidence in various scenarios in his life.
