I am dismayed it's taken me so long to discover this incredible genre, because it is so rich with history and because the writing is really GOOD. I knew about Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson and his role in bringing Superman to our collective superhero consciousness.
If Indiana Jones had a long lost Uncle, he would have a bio like Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson: Cavalry in the Mexican Revolution, serving in WW1 in the Philippines, espionage in Siberia, and then back to Eastern Europe! With natural storytelling ability and rich vein of material to mine, the Major settled into a career writing for the most popular adventure pulps of his day, Adventure and Argosy.
This selection of fictional stories by former Army officer Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson offer a unique insight into service with the Old Army along the U.S.
Major Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson was a professional Army officer, who experiencedmultiple lifetimes of adventure when he was stationed on the Mexican US border, dealing with insurgency in the Phillipines during WW Iand then gathering intelligence in Siberia. He was a real life adventurer who then wrote thrilling adventure stories for the major Pulps before he founded one of the first comic book companies that invented original comic stories.
Obviously since I wrote the introduction I am prejudiced in favor of this book. This is a collection of some of the best of Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's adventure stories featured in the best of the pulps--Adventure and Argosy among them.
