Shipped quick. In excellent shape.
Overall this book is pretty lighthearted and neat, I especially like the quilt patterns around the page edges. That said, the content of the book is so discordant with history it's jarring and it teaches a somewhat offensive lesson.
I found a lesson online for making generalizations that uses this story. My students did not have a lot of background knowledge on quilt making which made this story just ok for them.
I use this book at the beginning of every year. It illustrates the need to work together, which is a community building theme of my class.
I teach intermediate special education to 4th, 5th and 6th graders who had no background in algebra and basic number sense. Reading the story of Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt provided a means to evaluate the student's ability to identify patterns in the book, in the classroom and in their clothing.
Tihs book is about a man name Sam Johnson who wanted to make quilts. So Sam took the blue quilt from the pigs pin to patch the hole.
I read this book to my sixth grade Home Economics sewing classes. They love it and I enjoy introducing some literacy into my classroom.
Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt by Lisa Campbell Ernst is a delightful book about quilting, the stupidity of gender roles and the importance of cooperation. Sam after mending a tear in his clothing decides he likes sewing and wants to try something more creative, like quilting.
