HILL

About HILL

Ca. 1880s, Hill, a painter, took up photography. He established a studio called "Hill & Watkins" in San Jose, California, with his mother-in-law Laura J. Broughton Watkins. Hill was the photographer while Watkins financed the business which lasted until 1891. In 1889, Hill briefly became partners with J.C. Franklin, though it is unclear whether this partnership was under the name "Hill & Watkins" or whether it was a separate venture. In 1892, Hill formed a partnership with Sidney J. Yard and the two photographed much of Santa Clara County, California, until 1895. After the dissolution of this partnership, Hill went on to establish a successful business providing illustrations for publications. Comment on works: Portraits; Landscapes...
