Coques painted single and group portraits for Antwerp's rich bourgeoisie, rulers, and nobility. He is known for introducing a new portrait type to the southern Netherlands that fused group portraits with genre pieces; that of the small group portrait in which the subjects are shown performing their daily activities in their house or garden.
