I am very happy with the purchase.
A great loss of Galen Rowell to the visual world is still felt. His words and ideas are alive and well in past articles that have now been put together in this new classic for photographers of his generation and the new ones coming.
Love it.
A great book by one of the finest outdoor photographers that ever lived. One of Galen Rowell's finest.
While there is no doubt about the skills and knowledge possessed by Galen Rowell, and how he uses aperture, ISO, and SS to capture the light and contrast to convey his artistic vision, the book was disappointing. It was not a chapter book that builds and develops one depth of knowledge and understanding.
Make no mistake, Rowell was one the masters of landscape photography, or Dynamic Landscape photography, as he preferred to call it. After reading his "Mountain Light", I spent no time in ordering this item.
The book includes amazing photographs stunningly printed but the narrative is the best part. Mr.
I would have given it 5 stars if it had more pictures. I have enjoyed the book, the insights Galen gives are thought provoking.
As an amateur photographer and outdoor enthusiast I really enjoyed Galen Rowell's book of essays on various aspects of outdoor photography. It really opened my eyes to new shooting ideas and has helped me to tell better stories with my pictures.
This book has allowed me to grow as a photographer and overcome the preconceptions I had about photography. I don't know if it made me a better photographer, but I learned to have more control of the process.
This is a disappointing read for anyone that is looking for a book about photography. A good immediate clue that this book might not be what you expect is the sheer size of the book.
Galen Rowell was a great photographer, but he blathers on in this book, which I did not find at all helpful. Plus, many of the photos are tiny and the book is poorly designed.
Based on all the "this is the best photo book ever written" reviews and what a few photographer friends mentioned to me also, I trusted that I would love this and went ahead and bought it. I forced myself to get about one third through it.
Galen Rowell's books area revelation to me--the combination of unique photographs and a clear delineation of how his vision contributes to his photographs is unique. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, not only to photographers, but to anyone who is interested in living an expanded life!.
This is one of the greatest US nature photographers who is no longer with us. We're fortunate to have these memories of the great places he recorded with his energetic excursions.
