What with the republication this year of Litvinoff's `Journey Through a Small Planet' as a Penguin Modern Classic, and with the imminently forthcoming biography by Phil Ruff of the elusive anarchist Peter the Painter, it is perhaps time to republish Litvinoff's `A Death out of Season', the first volume of a trilogy which has been long out of print. It is a novel about a group of Latvian anarchists in the London of 1910 and 1911, who killed some policemen in a bungled raid into a jewellers' shop in Hounsditch and who were subsequently cornered in the famous Siege of Sidney Street.
