I thought that teaching was challenging in my, and other local districts...BUT, nothing I've experienced as a teacher has been as frustrating and degrading as what Dan Brown experienced!
With the fact that my wife was a teacher for a number of years in both urban and suburban environments this book does a tremendous job at capturing the first year of a teaching experience in a school that is all too common within the inner-city. The book was honest and true to the experience and sheds much light on the education system and those that are trying to save it one day at a time.
I picked up this memoir with some reluctance, since I expected it to be a bit rah-rah-rah and overly sentimental about the life-changing experience of teaching in one of NYC's worst schools. I was pleasantly surprised by the raw honesty in this book.
Fantastic book. very insightful for anyone going into teaching or going into inner city teaching.
