Stocky, balding French star character actor, on stage from the mid-1930s. Versatile in dramatic or comic roles as villains, bon vivants or maladroit bourgeois. He won a Golden Bear Award at the 1950 Berlin Film Festival, and an honorary Cesar (the French equivalent of an Oscar) just prior to his death in 1989.
